Toy RC airplanes can't do all the things their ritzy older brothers can-they're not as fast, won't do stunts, don't look as realistic-but they do make for a nice introduction to kids remote control. Because they're slower, less maneuverable, with fewer controls, they're also easier for youngsters to fly. They're safe and downright cheap compared to hobby-grade RC airplanes, and the same holds for toy RC helicopters. Helicopters have long been considered the most difficult RC aircraft to master and dangerous to boot. That's still true for large, multi-channel, single rotor rigs but, with movement limited to up or down, left or right, and straight ahead, kids remote control toys are easy enough for children as young as 6-8 to fly.


Toy copters are almost exclusively for indoor flying but toy planes can be flown outside in calm conditions. Batteries power toy RC helicopters and airplanes, so there's no issue with noise. Nitro motors are pretty loud, a factor that limits where you can fly them. With ideal wind conditions, you may be able to fly a toy in a public place like a park or parking lot, but always check to see that local ordinances don't prohibit RC flying altogether.


Because electric motors are simpler, more reliable and less subject to conking out mid-flight, toys are also less likely to crash (barring pilot error). If they do, they're don't damage as easily and if parts are needed are not expensive. In fact, you can probably buy a brand new toy for what a single part would cost for a nitro. Good toy RC helicopters and planes can be had for around $50.00-60.00, though you can get them for even less.


Safe, easy to fly, and in a price range to fit most budgets, toy RC models have made kids remote control a reality. They don't pretend to be serious flying machines, but they are loads of fun for children and provide a good first taste of RC aviation.
